5 Ways to Make a House Cosier

The nights are drawing in, there’s a chill in the air and frost is beginning to show…it’s all too clear that winter is on the way. The main thing that most people want to do at this time of year is batten down the hatches. Luckily there are a number of small changes that can be made to make homes cosier and ensure everyone remains nice and snug during the colder months.

  1. Add blankets and cushions

Dotting blankets around a house is a great way of making the space seem cosier. Not only do they look nice draped over sofas or hung up on coat rails, it also allows for guests to use them which makes a home seem welcoming and comfortable. Cushions are also a great addition to sofas and chairs as they can increase comfort or can add a decorative touch.

  1. Place rugs down

Adding rugs to rooms is a technique often deployed by interior designers to create dramatic effects. There are numerous colours, styles and textures of rugs available on the market so it’s easy to find the perfect one for each environment. Darker shades and soft textures are ideal for making a space cosier.

  1. Get the lighting right

The correct lighting is crucial to making a home seem cosy and the best thing to do is to avoid bright lights. Instead lighting a few candles creates a more inviting environment, especially if they are scented which can be even more relaxing. If candles aren’t a suitable option then lamps are also a great choice and there are some stunning contemporary designs available at the moment.

  1. Make a reading nook

A reading nook needn’t be made from cushions and duvets like a child’s den. Instead rearranging a couple of pieces of furniture can achieve the desired ‘cubby-like’ effect. It just needs to be a comfortable space where someone can curl up and wile away a few hours. It’s a good idea to do some research on the internet where plenty of inspiration for cosy reading nooks can be found.

Lastly, to make a room cosy, it needs to be comfortable. Investing in a good sofa or armchair is important for make the space feel like somewhere to relax.

Therefore, there are several small changes that can be made to make a home seem cosier. However, to reach optimum levels of cosiness, investing in a long-term option such as underfloor heating can be a great idea. Installing underfloor heating need not be a drastic option, especially if a water based system is installed as it is cost efficient due to low running temperatures and also warms using a radiant heat similar to the sun.
