The Outdoor Heating Trend

Finally it feels like summer is on the way. The clocks have gone forward and evenings are getting lighter.

Whilst not as warm as we may like it is still tempting to fire up the barbeque and start thinking about entertaining your friends in the garden or on the patio.

As more homeowners seek to bring the indoors to the outdoors, fireplaces and fire pits are becoming an even hotter commodity — literally and figuratively

We know the feeling well, it’s a lovely weekend, the sun is shining and you think, yes lets have some friends round for some alfresco dining. However typically as the evening draws in the typical British weather strikes and the cold spring evening air sets in.  Not to worry though because you can still enjoy the outdoors with some heating provided by an outdoor heater in the form of a fire pit, Chimnea or patio heater.

Once upon a time, the living room fireplace was the favoured gathering spot for family and guests, and roasting marshmallows over a campground fire was part of the annual family holiday. Modern outdoor living combines these two traditions into one with outdoor fireplaces and fire pits.

We all know gas patio heater that has been around for a while now. However over the last couple of years more and more people have been turning to the option of a fire pit or Chimnea to sit around during those fresh evenings.  As already mentioned this harks back to days of sitting round a campfire toasting marsh mallows and camping. But what is better than this feeling while sat in you own garden with your favourite drink and you family.

Within the Woodburning market there is a diverse range of outdoor fire pits and custom made Chimnea’s to suit you garden. From funky orange and green fire pits to tall contemporary steel Chimnea’s.

An area of great interest and growth at the moment is bespoke custom Chimnea’s, which can be made to pretty much any design. We have recently seen a retro VW camper van in a caricature style made by a local craftsman. These can be left in the natural steel finish, which has a protective lacquer or sprayed in a heatproof colour of your choice.  Another cool design is the Minion Chimnea (from Despicable Me).  We were especially impressed with the level of detail that goes into the design of these. The welding is a process called Tig welding, which takes a very skilled person to do. It produces a much neater and better-looking weld on the metal.  The flue parts of the Chimnea are stainless steel, which is welded onto the main body, which is made from steel.

Fire features such as fireplaces and fire pits “not only add ambiance to an outdoor space but also provide heat and light that allows you to use your deck later into the evening and into the year.

Just as with indoor Woodburning stoves the quality of the fuel that is burnt on the outdoor fire will make a difference to the enjoyment you get from it. Kiln dried logs  will burn with a cleaner flame than unseasoned wood and less smoke, however there are also scented logs and alternatives, some even made form waste coffee grounds.

So if you are looking for something to improve you garden this summer why not consider a firepit or chimnea.
